Obi-Wan & Saw Gerrera Returns in Star Wars Rebels
Obi-Wan has been on Rebels before, but as his younger incarnation, portrayed in the films by Ewan McGregor. This is the first time the Alec Guinness-era version of Kenobi will appear in animation. And the reason for his debut is almost as momentous: Darth Maul is finally going to get the rematch he’s been clamoring for since a much younger Kenobi cut his body in two at the end of The Phantom Menace.
However, I’d imagine that fight won’t happen until the season finale later in the year. Before that, there’s a whole lot of other great stuff going on: Sabine seems to be embracing the Force a bit, rocking the Darksaber and trying to recruit her fellow Mandalorians; Mon Mothma makes an appearance, along with fellow Rebel leader General Dodonna; the TIE Defender is finally here; Thrawn and Tarkin still seem to have a big part to play; and, of course, what is Ezra’s connection with Kenobi and his warning?
What isn’t here in this trailer is any hint that we’ll see the events of Rogue One on Rebels this season. There are certainly seeds of it, such as the coming together of the Rebel fleet. (I think I spotted some Death Troopers in the trailer, too.) But it seems likely that the battle of Scarif and all that signifies probably won’t show up on Disney XD until the next season t the earliest. Then again, maybe they’re just hiding it. Either way, this trailer is still quite badass.
Rebels returns Saturday with a two-part episode featuring Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrera.
