Vladimir Nabokov on Writing, Reading, and the Three Qualities a Great Storyteller Must Have | Brain Pickings

" There are three points of view from which a writer can be considered: he may be considered as a storyteller, as a teacher, and as an enchanter. A major writer combines these three — storyteller, teacher, enchanter — but it is the enchanter in him that predominates and makes him a major writer." 12 Stanley Kubrick Strategies for Perfecting a Film | Mental Floss Director Stanley Kubrick died in 1999, but he still remains an integral part of our culture today. The  recent documentary  Room 237  explored various conspiracy theories about  The Shining . An  extensive Kubrick exhibition  is touring the world. And Kubrick’s work is continually noted as influential on contemporary directors of huge blockbusters such as Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese. Here are 12 things Stanley Kubrick would do in order to perfect a shot, performance, or film. 1. ADAPT ANY SOURCE MATERIAL. Kubrick left no stone unturned when it came to genre or source material. He sometimes worked with non-fiction elements and other times adapted novels into films. He used shorter stories as basis for  2001: A Space Odyssey  and  Eyes Wide Shut , one a science fiction epic and the other a character-driven drama. Stephen King has been  vocal about his hatred for Kubrick’s adaptation of  The Shining

Go Behind The Scenes of the Criterion Collection's restoration of Alfred Hitchcock's, "Foreign Correspondent"

Go Behind-The-Scenes of the Criterion Collection 's  restoration of  Alfred Hitchcock 's, "Foreign Correspondent". Taking the negative from the Library of Congress from a 1940 print, Mr. Klein, technical director at Criterion Collection, goes over the process of taking the negative film (rare because a negative from that era often times does not exist), eliminating 'weave, flicker, light intrusion', etc. The negative is evaluated and scanned to determine restoration processes. To Mr. Klein's surprise, the negative was in excellent shape. He explain how the 2K scanning process took two days and further explains that the 4K process takes four times as long. A file for each frame of film is scanned and processed to begin the digital restoration process. Matching the director's and cinematographer's work from the time period, they are able to determine what editing and image quality the restored film should be matched too. Using a combination of sc

“Failing to prepare, is preparing to fail.”  That was the mantra of my first producing teacher, David Garcia, at The Los Angeles Film School. Dan Cotreau, who is always preparing for anything and everything, has been hard at work for months, diligently creating budgets, schedules, shots and logistical plans for TRONA. As most of you know, making a movie is a collaborative medium and there are many people that have jumped in to help Dan prepare for TRONA. Beginning with the script, Dan and Kelly Cotreau have gone back and forth making sure we had a strong story, breaking down plot to find the center of motivation and purpose of TRONA. Dan and Ashley Parker Angel have discussed the particulars of each character to bring truth to their performances. This aspect of production is arduous but necessary in order for our audience to become invested in the journey of these characters.  On the logistical side of this production, Dan and I have spent hours discussing shots, camer

Aaron Sorkin on Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Death: 10 Other People Who Were About to Die Won’t

Sorkin writes that both were “fathers of young children, and we were both recovering drug addicts” Aaron Sorkin, an Academy Award winning screenwriter and television creator who has struggled with addiction in the past, says Philip Seymour Hoffman talked about the silver lining of his death years beforehand while both bonded over their drug use on the set of “Charlie Wilson’s War.” “I told him I felt lucky because I’m squeamish and can’t handle needles. He told me to stay squeamish. And he said this: ‘If one of us dies of an overdose, probably 10 people who were about to won’t,’” Sorkin wrote in  Time . “He meant that our deaths would make news and maybe scare someone clean.” Also read:   Three Charged With Drug Possession After Raid in Philip Seymour Hoffman Investigation Sorkin, who also wrote Hoffman’s role in “Moneyball,” called the 46-year-old a ”decent, magnificent, thunderous actor” who “completely dominated the real estate upon which every one of his characters walk
